Toronto, Ontario (June 8, 2021) – Habitat for Humanity Canada announced the winners of the 2021 Meaning of Home writing contest. Revera is proud to support Habitat for Humanity Canada as a sponsor of the annual writing contest, and its mission to educate the next generation on the importance of safe and inclusive housing.
The Meaning of Home is an annual writing contest for students in grades four, five and six in support of Habitat for Humanity Canada. Each student entry earns a $10 donation to a local Habitat for Humanity. Canadian students are invited to submit a poem or essay explaining what the word “home” means to them. This creative and interactive contest helps young people reflect on what a home means to them and to others in their community.
Three grand prize winners are selected from each grade, winning a $30,000 grant each for their local Habitat for Humanity. Nine runners-up are also awarded a $10,000 grant each for their local organizations. This year’s contest raised a record $300,000, building homes for families in need of a safe and secure place to call home.
“Thank you to all the students across Canada who participated in this year’s contest. Your contributions resulted in a record $300,000 in funds raised for local Habitat for Humanity organizations,” says Thomas G. Wellner, President and CEO, Revera. “At Revera, we take the concept of home very seriously. We provide homes to thousands of Canadian seniors, and every day our team members work hard to create safe, welcoming and loving places to live. This year’s winning poems captured that spirit beautifully.”
Annika K. from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is the Grade 4 grand prize winner and her $30,000 grant will be going to Habitat for Humanity Manitoba. Annika's winning entry is "What is Home."
Jake T. is the Grade 5 grand prize winner, from Montreal, Quebec. His $30,000 grant will go to Habitat for Humanity Quebec. Jake's illustrated book "Home: a small word with big meaning" is the winning entry.
Kara T. is the Grade 6 grand prize winner, from Orangeville, Ontario, whose $30,000 grant will help build homes with Habitat for Humanity Halton-Mississauga-Dufferin. Her winning entry is "What home means to me."
“Our long term care homes and retirement residences are home to thriving communities of older adults,” says Wellner. “We’re proud to join Habitat for Humanity Canada in its mission to ensure everyone has a safe and welcoming place to call home.”
