MISSISSAUGA, ON, January 29, 2023 – It is with deep sadness Revera joins Canadians in mourning the passing of Hazel McCallion earlier today. Hazel served as Revera’s Chief Elder Officer, bringing her leadership and wisdom to champion positive change in the senior living sector.
“Hazel McCallion has been an extraordinary role model for all of us, it’s no wonder she earned the nickname Hurricane Hazel,” said Tom Wellner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Revera Inc.
“Hazel was one of Revera’s most beloved and influential leaders. She embodied what it means to live a life of purpose and she made a profound impact on all who had the privilege to know and work with her.”
— Tom Wellner, President and Chief Executive Officer of Revera Inc.
A trailblazer in politics, business and sport, Hazel’s dedication to the communities she served was profound. She lived an exceptional life dedicated to serving the citizens of Mississauga. She was the city’s longest-serving mayor, sitting for twelve consecutive terms. After her retirement at the age of 93, she continued to dedicate herself to her community, serving on several boards and promoting many local causes.
As Revera’s “other CEO” Hazel continued her lifelong commitment to serving her community in her work with seniors. Drawing from her career in the private sector to her service as mayor, Hazel provided a significant perspective to Revera’s leadership. As Chief Elder Officer, she advocated on behalf of residents and staff, pushing for positive outcomes that benefited seniors and those who care for them in the senior living sector.
Most notably, Hazel was an advocate for Age is More, Revera’s social cause to change negative attitudes about aging. Through research, commentary and storytelling, Age is More aims to shine a spotlight on the exceptional lives of older people.
“Hazel’s compassion and commitment to combatting ageism, our society’s most accepted form of prejudice, was truly inspirational,” said Wellner. “Her impact on Revera, her community and Canadians across the country is immeasurable. We will celebrate her life by honouring her extraordinary commitment to service and innovation.”
