Everyone has their own reasons to be thankful. In our latest collaboration with Reel Youth for the Age is More Film Project, we wanted to learn a little more about that subject, and specifically what types of things bring our residents joy. The results were heartfelt and inspiring as the film stars recounted how they maintain a positive outlook despite the many challenges that have occurred over the past two years.
Nine residents from three of Revera’s retirement residences – Birkdale Place in Milton, The Williamsburg in Burlington, and Briarfield Gardens in Kitchener, Ontario – took part in the program. The Age Is More Film Project connects residents in Revera’s retirement homes with young people who are interested in learning how to make their own short films. Each project explores a new topic as the youth and seniors work together to bring each film to life.
Revera and Reel Youth responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by adapting the program to be as safe as possible for residents and filmmakers. At the onset of the pandemic, the program was converted from an in-person experience to a virtual one as our filmmakers and film stars met over Zoom. They worked together on a story template that would help guide the narrative of each resident’s life experiences. The results are rich stories that include the importance of giving of time, loving your family and staying positive in the face of adversity.
Once the films were completed, the filmmakers, the stars and their families came together for a virtual premiere of the films. It was a moment to celebrate the accomplishments and the hard work that went into creating the short videos. It was also a chance to reflect on the collaboration and new friendships that were formed during the filmmaking process. Most importantly, it was an opportunity to appreciate where each resident film star has come from and give them their moment to share their journey.
