Caregiving Facts and Figures

For people with ongoing care needs, the health system is only part of the solution – and often a relatively small part. In fact, one study shows that family caregivers provide more than 80% of the care required by people with long term conditions. The Canadian Caregiver Coalition, of which Revera is a founding member, has looked at the impact of caregiving – on family members and society – and found the following:
  • At least four to five million Canadians provide care for a family member with long term health problems
  • Caregivers contributean estimated $5 billion-plus of unpaid labour annually in elder care
  • The economic value of unpaid work for all caregiving (chronic and palliative care) is $6-9 billion
  • More than one-third of caregivers report extra expenses due to their caregiving responsibilities, costing Canadians (conservatively) an estimated $80 million a year
  • Most caregivers are women, between ages 45 and 64
  • 70% of caregivers are employed
  • Caregiving has a huge effect on the workforce. Individuals who provide four hours or more of care per week are more likely to reduce their work hours, change their work patterns, or turn down a job offer or promotion
