Seniors and Fitness Myths

Why bother getting fit? After all:
  1. There’s no point – I’m going to get old anyway
  2. Exercise increases the risk of falls
  3. I’m too old to start
  4. I can’t make it out to a gym
These are some of the excuses used to avoid getting fit – and each is a common myth. The facts:
  1. I’m going to get old anyway. Exercise can’t reverse aging, but it can make you feel stronger, and may even reduce the risk of many health problems we associate with aging, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, and more.
  2. Exercise increases the risk of falls. The opposite is true. By improving your balance, strengthening your muscles and joints, and limiting the loss of muscles and bone mass, exercise reduces your risk of falling. Be sure to discuss your exercise regimen with a doctor or health care professional to ensure activities are appropriate for your situation.
  3. I’m too old to start. Whatever your age, and even if you haven’t exercised in a long time – or ever – you can start slowly and still reap the benefits.
  4. I can’t make it out to a gym. You don’t need a gym to exercise. Try visiting the recreation area at your retirement residence. No membership is required to start walking outdoors or become more active throughout your day.
