  1. What should be considered when choosing a long term care home?

    Long term care should be about helping residents live life to the fullest extent possible. Each individual defines that differently and that’s why Revera focuses on meeting residents unique’ needs.
     
    When making the choice to move into long term care, it’s important to see the home for yourself. To help with that process, Revera has prepared a Home Tour Checklist that covers a range of topics. Use it to ask the best questions, assess key features, and make useful comparisons.

  2. What types of accommodation are available?

    To suit the needs and preferences of residents, long term care homes typically offer the choice of private, semi-private and ward accommodations.

  3. What basic services are offered at a long term care home?

    As a basic package, all long term care homes offer:
    • Nursing and personal care on a 24-hour basis;
    • Access to a physician, and other health professionals;
    • Standard room furnishings (e.g. bed, chair);
    • Meals (including special diets);
    • Bed linens and laundry;
    • Housekeeping;
    • Personal hygiene supplies;
    • Medical/clinical supplies and devices (e.g. walkers, wheelchairs for occasional use);
    • Medication administration;
    • Assistance with the essential activities of daily living;
    • Social and recreational programs; and
    • Pastoral services.

  5. How much does it cost to live in a long term care home?

    Rates for long term care accommodation are established by the provincial government. Depending on the resident’s income, rate subsidies may be available. For information, please contact the appropriate provincial agency (see Admissions Process) or one of Revera’s homes.

  6. Who pays for what?

    The costs of long term care are shared by the resident and the government. Typically, residents pay for their accommodation, while the government covers the costs of things like care, some medications, food, and programming.

  8. Are personal items or furniture allowed?

    Revera residents are encouraged to bring special keepsakes to put on display - pictures for the wall, a favourite chair or a small table if there’s enough space – anything to give the room your own touch.

  9. Do residents provide their own clothing?

    Revera residents are encouraged to be dressed in their choice of personal clothing every day.

  10. How can I help my loved one settle into a long term care home?

    By remembering that it’s just that, their new home. Help them feel that way by decorating their room with personal belongings, or bringing in photos of their family.
     
    It’s important to also talk openly about their feelings regarding the move. This is a big transition. By remaining positive about the opportunity to access the very best care, recreation and nutrition, you can help your loved one to focus on what the move means for their overall well-being.

  11. How often can I visit?

    Families and friends are encouraged to visit Revera long term care homes as often as possible. These visits are an important part of a resident’s life and support their emotional well-being.

  12. How can I ensure a good visit?

    Do what feels right. Whether playing a game, going for a walk, or just enjoying a talk or quiet time together, do what works for you and your loved one. Remember, don’t feel pressure. It’s not up to you to constantly entertain.

  13. Can I bring young children to visit?

    Definitely. That will only strengthen the inter-generational connection, something that’s vital for children and seniors alike.

  14. Can I stay to have a meal with a resident?

    Families who wish to stay and dine with residents are welcome to do so. Dining together with a loved one can make a resident’s day.

  15. Can I bring in some favourite treats occasionally?

    Yes, but let staff know to ensure that the food doesn’t conflict with the resident’s diet and follow all regulations on storing and refrigerating foods.

  16. Do families have a voice in the long term care communities?

    Families play a significant role as partners in the care of their loved ones living in a long term care home. At Revera, we respect residents' families and work to support maintaining those relationships. 
     
    We value the contributions and involvement of residents' families and encourage them to participate in the home's Family Council. Family Councils exist as separate, autonomous organizations, and have proven very effective in building strong ties between families, residents and our teams.

  17. Do long term care homes ever need volunteers?

  18. What is Revera’s policy to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities?

    Revera is committed to excellence in serving all customers, including people with disabilities.  In Ontario for example, we have a formal policy in place as per the customer service standard under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.
